THE SOCIETY OF MINORITY FIREFIGHTERS-FLINT WELCOMES YOU

Minority Firefighters from the City of Flint Fire Department founded the Society of Minority Firefighters in 1983. Their goals were to promote the furtherance of culture and education within the City of Flint, Michigan for all individuals who were classified as a minority.
The Society of Minority Firefighters knew that they must unite. The organization wanted to be respectful and resourceful enough to lend a “helping hand” when needed. They wanted to aid in the recruitment and training of minorities as they entered the fire department. The Society of Minority Firefighters wanted to help brothers and sisters that would reflect the same strength, courage and tenacity that they themselves had shown.
In May of 1983, the founding members met with a representative from the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters in Chicago, Illinois. Thus on October 18, 1983, this organization was born. The main goals included minority recruitment and service to the Flint Community. These goals have remained for over 30 years.
